Fourth Grade

Ms. Connie Grabert
In fourth grade, students learn by working individually, with a partner, and in small groups. The following give you an idea of the topics we cover in fourth grade. If your child ever has something to share that is related to a topic we are discussing, I'd love for him/her to bring it in for the class to see. I hope you can come and visit us sometime.
This is how is grade:
*Letter grades are placed at the top of each assignment
*Unit reviews count double
*Tests count double
Notes sent home are the best way to get in touch with me right away. If you want to make sure that I receive the note, you could write "See Note" in the planner and I'll be sure to ask your child if he/she has a note for me! I usually check my e-mail at least once a week, so you can contact me in that way too. My email address is cgrabert@evansville-diocese.org
Religion
In our religion classes, the students learn the importance of respect and responsibilty. Throughout the year, the students study the Ten Commandments as well as other aspects of the Catholic faith.
Reading
We will be doing many different forms of writing throughout the year. The grade for writing assignments is based on capitalization, punctuation, original ideas, good descriptions, spelling, and following the directions given for a particular assignment.
Story quizzes are given at the end of each story. This quiz will check comprehension and vocabulary.
We will be working on building critical thinking skills throughout the year. This is an important skill for all classes.
Spelling
Spelling tests will not be taken on a certain day every week. The tests will be taken after we have read the story and worked with the words.
Language
The students will begin the year learning about different types of sentences and subjects and predicates. As the year continues, they will learn about the parts of speech and the correct way to use these words in speaking and writing.
Indiana History
We will be studying the geography and history of Indiana. The students will learn about the important people and events that are a part of our heritage. Sometime during the year we will celebrate this heritage with Pioneer and Native American Day. This is usually held during the month of March, but may change this year.
As part of their Indiana History grade, the students will also be learning about antoher aspect of social studies-the continents and the United States. The students will be working with maps of the continents and will learn about the geography of the United States.
Math
We will be studying many concepts that will include place value, addition and subtraction of larger numbers, money, time graphing, measurement, geometry, multiplying and dividing larger numbers, fractions, probability, and decimals. We have a lot to learn!
Science
The students will have Mrs. Gray for science class on Monday through Thursday from 1:15-2:00. In the spring, the students will participate in the school Science Fair.
Health
In health, students will learn about the parts of the human body and how these parts work. They will also learn about ways to take care of their bodies.
Physical Education
The students will have PE on Thursdays with Sister Teresa. Your child should wear tennis shoes on that day so they will be able to fully participate.
Computer
The students will be having computer class on Fridays with Mrs. Springer. The class will reinforce math, reading, and social studies skills. The students will be taught keyboarding skills too. The computers will be used to aid in writing stories and reports.
The class will be using the computer at other times to aid them with projects or assignments.
Art
I will be teaching Art on Fridays. We will be learning about various artists and different elements of art. We will also be doing art activities that will correlate to other subjects.
Music
Students will attend music class on Mondays and Tuesdays with Sister Teresa. On Mondays, the students will be working on songs for choir. On Tuesdays, they will be working on other types of music. They will receive recorders sometime during the year. Please encourage your child to practice.
